NASCAR sued Buick, and the end result is the Grand National badge--featuring stacked words with a checkered flag--that has graced every Grand National through 1987. Initially, Flint was only going to produce 100 GN models, but that number swelled to 215, not including the prototype.
The 1955 NASCAR Grand National season was pivotal for the future of NASCAR. It started when Mercury Outboard magnate Carl Kiekhaefer appeared virtually overnight with a powerful Chrysler 300. He brought the car to Daytona without a driver, but Tim Flock, who quit NASCAR in 1954 after he was disqualified from the Daytona victory, was the logical choice.
In late 1981, Buick decided to commemorate that performance with a special-edition Buick Regal Grand National (the original name of NASCAR’s top racing series, since 1971 known as the Winston Cup Grand National).
In February 1982, the Regal Grand National debuted, which was named for the NASCAR Winston Cup Grand National Series (the "Grand National" term was part of the Cup series nomenclature until 1986). Buick had won the Manufacturers Cup in 1981 and 1982, and wanted to capitalize on its success: "What wins on Sunday, sells on Monday".
